I was experimenting in Aperture and really liked this heavily processed version of the original photograph. The sky reminds me of the kinds of tones that Chromasia often uses.

The Blades Air Display team, and some lens flare. Normally photographers will go to enormous lengths to prevent or remove lens flare, but in this case I don't mind it. It works, somehow - for me, at least.

 <img src="http://www.holdbackthesky.com/thumbnails/thumb_20100715212524__w6c0371.jpg"><br/>
The Toyota Celica GT-Four rally car, on the forest rally stage at Goodwood. This was my favourite shot from the stage when I initially saw it, but my previous photo of the Lancia may have eclipsed it in my affections now. Either way, I wanted to post it for everyone to see. I was aiming for a McKlein sort of feel, like the shot might have been taken back in the 90s.

 <img src="http://www.holdbackthesky.com/thumbnails/thumb_20100713211625__w6c0242.jpg"><br/>
The Lancia 037 powering away at the Goodwood Festival of Speed rally stage. The dust was really thick at the start line and I knew that the power of the 037 would throw big plumes into the air, so I positioned myself behind the line well in advance and waited in the baking sun as the less powerful cars came and went, until it was the turn of the Lancia. I think the result was worth it.

I always think of this kind of lighting as Spielbergian, after the lighting in E.T. in those woodland scenes.

Against a Baysian sky

 <img src="http://www.holdbackthesky.com/thumbnails/thumb_20100702131239__w6c0464.jpg"><br/>
I liked the composition of this photograph, but wasn't so keen on the background. The sky was a bit washed out, so I started processing the photograph to find a way to give the photograph more impact. Grading the image from blue to orange seemed to do the trick (for me, at least) and as an unashamed fan of Michael Bay's aircraft/sunset silhouettes I absolutely had to post this version. The subject is the Blades Air Display team, who were utterly amazing and even beat the legendary Red Arrows for jaw-dropping moments.

How about a break from the car photographs? I went to the RAF Biggin Hill Air Fair on Sunday, and came back with 700+ photographs of the sky with flying machines in it - traded cars for aircraft, for a change! This is the Red Arrows display team, and one of the best photographs I took that day.

This is my favourite of the photographs from the BMW shoot last weekend. Allowing a very dark background really makes the front of the car jump out of the frame, I think, and gives it a look that sells the more aggressive styling of this car over some of the other roadsters available.

I've been lucky enough to look after a BMW Z4M Roadster for a few weeks, while its generous owner is in the US. I decided to get it detailed at the weekend, and take some 'beauty' photographs before I have to give it back! This is number one of three photographs I'll be posting. Oh, and that white blob in the top right corner is the moon!
